There are situations when one is studying something about an unnamed product and for simplicity has dubbed it a widget.  We have all come to understand that a widget can be anything that has been manufactured. It makes sense, then, to see this term used for the vast expanse of programs and code designed to perform a specific task whether on a desktop, website, or mobile telephone.
